One of the Most Beautiful Routes on Kilimanjaro

Lemosho is considered one of the most beautiful routes on Kilimanjaro. Starting from the western Londorossi Gate, it passes through Lemosho Glades — one of the few areas on Kilimanjaro where you can spot wildlife including buffalo and elephant.

The route climbs through pristine rainforest before joining the Machame route at the Shira Plateau on day 4. Excellent acclimatisation profile with the "climb high, sleep low" strategy. Fewer trekkers on the first few days makes it feel more remote and exclusive.

Highest summit success rate of all routes.

9-Day Lemosho Itinerary

A well-paced itinerary designed for optimal acclimatisation and the highest chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Airport pickup, hotel transfer and trek briefing with your lead guide. Gear check and final preparations.

Day 2

Londorossi Gate (2,100m) → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m)

6 km · 3–4 hours. Drive through Lemosho Glades with possible wildlife sightings — buffalo and elephant roam this western corridor. Enter montane rainforest and trek to Big Tree Camp.

Day 3

Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

8 km · 5–7 hours. Ascend through the heather zone to the moorland of the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens up dramatically as you leave the forest behind.

Day 4

Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

6 km · 3–4 hours. Cross the vast Shira Plateau with views of Kibo peak ahead. A shorter day to aid acclimatisation at altitude.

Day 5

Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)

10 km · 6–8 hours. The crucial "climb high, sleep low" acclimatisation day. Ascend to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp in the shadow of the Great Barranco Wall.

Day 6

Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp (3,995m)

5 km · 4–5 hours. Scale the famous Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical scramble with rewarding views from the top. Traverse to the Karanga Valley.

Day 7

Karanga → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

4 km · 3–4 hours. Alpine desert terrain. Final camp before the summit push. Early dinner, rest and preparation for the midnight start.

Day 8

Summit Day — Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Millennium Camp

14–18 hours total. Midnight start. Climb through the night to reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim at sunrise, then push on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. Descend to Millennium Camp to rest.
