Planning Your Tanzania Safari

Everything you need to know before you travel — from climate and visas to what to pack and how to pay.

Climate & Best Season

Tanzania has a sub-tropical climate with two rainy seasons: the long rains (March–May) and short rains (November). The dry season from June to October offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. The Great Migration calving happens December–March in Ndutu, while Mara River crossings peak July–September. Green season offers lush scenery and lower prices.

Visa & E-Visa

A tourism entry visa must be applied for online before departure. The standard tourist visa costs $50 USD (US citizens pay $100). Our Arusha office can assist you with the online application process. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry and has at least 2 blank pages.

Currency & Payments

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US Dollars are widely accepted — especially for safari-related expenses. ATMs are available in Arusha and major towns. All wire transfers for safari bookings should only be paid into our account in Tanzania in the name of Savannah Explorers Ltd.

Safety

Tanzania is a peaceful country — travelling here is completely safe. We provide 24/7 emergency support throughout your trip with multiple emergency phone numbers. Our guides are trained in first aid and all vehicles carry safety and communication equipment. We also provide detailed pre-departure travel advice.

What to Wear

Wear neutral or khaki colours — avoid black and dark blue as these attract tsetse flies. Bring layers for cool mornings and evenings at altitude, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen (SPF 50+), insect repellent and comfortable walking shoes. We'll send you a detailed packing list after booking.

Accommodation

We offer three accommodation tiers: luxury lodges with full amenities and spa facilities, mid-range tented camps with comfortable beds and hot showers, and mobile camping for a more immersive bush experience. All options are carefully vetted and we partner with locally owned lodges wherever possible.
