Everything you need to know before you travel — from climate and visas to what to pack and how to pay.
Tanzania has a sub-tropical climate with two rainy seasons: the long rains (March–May) and short rains (November). The dry season from June to October offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. The Great Migration calving happens December–March in Ndutu, while Mara River crossings peak July–September. Green season offers lush scenery and lower prices.
A tourism entry visa must be applied for online before departure. The standard tourist visa costs $50 USD (US citizens pay $100). Our Arusha office can assist you with the online application process. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry and has at least 2 blank pages.
The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US Dollars are widely accepted — especially for safari-related expenses. ATMs are available in Arusha and major towns. All wire transfers for safari bookings should only be paid into our account in Tanzania in the name of Savannah Explorers Ltd.
